   Chairman of “Azersu” OJSC Gorkhmaz Huseynov received family of William Lindley, the designer of Baku water Pipeline I (Shollar) that plays great role in water supply of Baku. On April 8 Lindley family Karin Maria Marta, Eugen Jozeph, Katharina Anjelika Morvin, Alexander Uolter Horst, as well as prof. Ryszard Zelichowski, Director for Scientific Research at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and researcher of Lindsey’s activity were in “Azersu” OJSC.

   Welcoming the guests, Chairman of “Azersu” OJSC Gorkhmaz Huseynov said that famous engineer William Lindley has a great role in the history of the water supply in Azerbaijan. Baku water Pipeline I, designed by William Lindley is operating for more than 100 years: “The pipeline laid mainly by hand is notable for its high quality and uniqueness. It has been used so far with stable productivity and needs no any capital repairs, thus confirming the professionalism of William Lindley. Presently major projects are carried out in Azerbaijan. We always offer “Shollar” project as an example to contractor organizations for effective implementation of the projects. In 2017 we will celebrate the 100th anniversary since the commissioning of the first Shollar water supply system laid in Baku. We would be pleased to see you in event.”

   Expressing gratitude on behalf of Lindley family Eugen Joseph highly evaluated the respect to the memory of his granddad, and said that this visit has made ​​a good impression on them.

   William Lindley (30 January 1853 in Hamburg- 30 December 1917 in London) was an English engineer who dedicated his life to creation of urban water supply systems. He had designed multiple water and sewerage systems for more than thirty cities across Europe (Frankfurt, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, etc.), as well as water supply system in Baku.

    Note that in the late 19th century specialists were invited for construction of water supply system in Baku by approval of City Duma. Accepting the invitation English engineer William Lindley firstly researched the underground waters. Baku water Pipeline I designed by Lindley takes its source from underground waters in Shollar in Khachmaz located 187km far from Baku. “Shollar” is fed by 24 Nos artesian wells water, as well as spring and lay waters. Construction of Shollar water pipeline was commenced in 1903 and completed in 1917. On February 18 in the same year was dated as the inauguration of “Baku-Shollar” water pipeline.

  The capacity of source of “Shollar” water pipeline laid with financial support of famous philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev supplies population of Baku with water for about 100 years. The pipeline operating continuously since 1917 has not changed. The pipeline products on average 1270 l water during the year.
