Oghuz- Gabala- Baku Water Pipeline

Oghuz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline is the last and hugest design that supplies Absheron Peninsula with drinking water. The project is intended transport of fresh water from Oghuz to Baku by pipeline under the name of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. Great Leader Heydar Aliyev announced in the conference carried out in December, 2002 that it was necessary to transport high quality spring water to Baku and with this purpose conducted appropriate instruction on usage of underground water of Oghuz-Gabala zone.

Implementation of Oghuz-Gabala-Baku Water Pipeline Project had been started following Order No 972 dated August, 2005 “About additional action on accelerating of the socio-economic development of the districts of Azerbaijan such as Oghuz, Ismayilli, Gabala and Shamakhi” signed by President Ilham Aliyev. Cabinet of Ministers and “Azersu” OJSC were charged to prepare suggestions for transporting new water pipeline from Oghuz to Baku according to Action Plans confirmed by the same order. The parameters of the project were discussed in the conference held in September, 2005 under the chairmanship of President Ilham Aliyev. After two years construction was started in March, 2007. Inauguration ceremony of Oghuz-Gabala-Baku Water Pipeline financed on State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan Republic was on December 28, 2010.

Oghuz-Gabala-Baku Water Pipeline with the capacity of 5 m3 per second by gravity is 262,5 km long, 2000 millimeters in diameter was laid by GRP pipes. 55 km of the water pipeline with the pressure higher than 20 atmospheres including river and road crossings was built by steel pipes.

78 operation and 20 observation wells were drilled in Oghuz region with the purpose of supplying the pipeline with water. Presently the capacity of some wells is 130 liters although it was forecasted to be 70 liters following the design. Monitoring the observation wells show the dynamic of the wells is higher than planned project.

The water from the wells enters the water intake facility built at the beginning of the trunk water pipe and being chlorinated is pumped into two reservoirs with a volume of 10,000 cubic meters and then transferred to the main pipeline. Pressure regulator chambers (in Oghuz Plants Compound, in the 153rd km and Absheron Plants Compound)   in three locations and pressure fracture chambers were installed in two locations (31 and 158 km). In general, operating mode of the pipeline is controlled by SCADA system. The water pipeline is passed through eight regions.

The quality of water transmitted to Baku by Oghuz-Gabala-Baku pipeline is fully compatible to the standards of World Health Organization. Presently the capacity of water transmitted to Baku by this pipeline is 5m3/s in accordance with the project.

Transmitted water to Baku via Oghuz-Gabala-Baku pipeline in self-flowing mode supplies parts of Absheron, Yasamal, Nasimi and Sabail districts, as well as some villages along the transmission main.

Totally 779.6 million manat was allocated from the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline project and the project financing has been completed.
